For most of my adult life I had been slowly gaining weight and exercising less for a variety of reasons (excuses). This, in turn, led to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other issues. I couldn’t have imagined how much my life would be changed for the better when I decided to take the leap of faith and contact JWFNS. By sticking with it, I was able to lose an amazing 60 pounds in 6 months. Because of my new healthy lifestyle, my doctor has taken me completely off my blood pressure and cholesterol medications and is weaning me off the others. I’m even thinking of entering my first 5k next year. I can’t thank JWFNS enough for getting me on the right path. I came to my dietitian at the beginning of my weight-loss journey in February. I had told her that I was a repeat offender of diets and I had been scared by my last physical where my doctor said something had to change or I was going to have to take multiple medications for high cholesterol and diabetes. Maintaining a healthy weight has been a lifelong struggle. A couple of years ago, I discovered a love of running. I was in a car accident in February 2017 and not allowed to do any physical activity. I’m an emotional eater, and I wasn’t allowed to run, which had been my stress outlet, so I needed to do something. It’s been very close to a year since I got serious about changing my body and improving my health with JWFNS. While weight loss was a goal of mine, my major concern was to lower my high blood sugar, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol level. I had been living a sedentary lifestyle for well over a decade, and the weight gain and alarming blood test results were testaments to that couch-potato life. My doctor was concerned and said I needed to change things, especially with my family history of stroke and heart disease. It was after that doctor visit that I made up my mind to indeed “change things.” I knew what needed to change, but how was the question. One thing was for certain, I knew I couldn’t do it on my own; I tried in the past and failed. I knew to truly change things, I had to find a fitness studio that was just as dedicated at seeing me reach my goals as I was. I didn’t want just a membership to some box gym. I needed guidance, instruction and accountability. I met with several small gyms and finally decided on JWFNS. I chose JWFNS because of their one-on-one approach to both nutrition and exercise. It’s the kind of attention I needed and couldn’t find elsewhere. It’s amazing what you can do when you are determined and committed because, almost a year later, I am now 22 pounds lighter, have gained muscle, and have greatly improved my health. My blood sugar is well below the pre-diabetic level, my triglycerides have dropped an astonishing 185 points, and my cholesterol level has decreased by 34 points and no longer considered high. While I haven’t reached my long-range goals, I have definitely met my immediate ones. I feel so much better, and I‘ve noticed a tremendous decrease, if not complete elimination, in the lower back pain I was experiencing almost daily. No longer do I get winded when I climb a few flights of stairs; I feel comfortable again in my clothes; I can jog on the treadmill, not just walk. From childhood into my early forties, I could eat anything and not gain any weight. As a result, I developed poor eating habits. I was a true junk-food junkie. Fast foods and all types of sweets were my favorites. I also ate my share of fried foods and things smothered in sauces and gravies. Things began to change in my forties and I gradually developed a lot of belly fat. By the time I entered my fifties, I suffered from high cholesterol, hypertension and experienced several digestive ailments. I took prescription medication in addition to multiple over-the-counter medications for acid reflux and heartburn on a daily basis. I had joined gyms several times over the years, but I was never motivated enough to be successful. In ten months at JWFNS, I have lost over twenty pounds and four inches from my waist. My energy level and stamina has increased tremendously and I have a healthier body fat percentage. My endurance has increased to a point where I was able to complete two 8K races. Thanks to the combination of the nutritional plan along with exercise, I have a healthier cholesterol level and I no longer need medications for heartburn.

“I hit my mid 40s and working out just wasn’t “working” anymore. I wasn’t overweight, but I was no longer fit. I was, sadly, looking more and more like a frumpy, middleaged mom. I have always been active and fit, but I still struggle with finding the motivation and determination to push myself to achieve the lofty goals I know I am capable of. As a runner for the past 16 years, I have finished many races; some races were personal records (PRs) and some I placed in my age group, but my big dream and goal has been to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I was on track to qualify when I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer and went through seven months of treatment. While I am obviously thankful for my return to good health, ever since I have found myself discouraged trying to regain the speed and strength I once had. With the help of everyone at JWFNS, I recently finished a half-marathon and a full-marathon in record times for me, and I am now in the best physical condition I have ever been in. I’m so glad I came back to JWFNS. In 2010, I joined JWFNS and I knew I needed to lose the weight, but I did not have the right mindset. I ended up quitting before I had any real progress. In 2013, my boyfriend and I moved in with his father to help him due to medical issues. After living with his father for about a year, it clicked. I knew I was very unhealthy, could not live like this anymore, and didn’t want to end up sick and with medical issues myself. In September of 2014, I rejoined JWFNS and I’m so glad I did! With my trainer’s help, I won the JWFNS 90-Day Challenge and am down 60 pounds and counting. Along with the weight loss and new strength, I have also gained speed. I was told at the doctor’s office that as a Health Care Professional I should know better. The realization was complete when I returned home and looked at photos of myself. I decided then to make a change that would affect not only my physical health, but my mental health as well. This has been such an incredible journey with JWFNS. Honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to spend my summer after graduating college any other way. I was never athletic and was petrified of the idea of working with a trainer and a Dietitian. I read a review online that said “Don’t walk. Run to Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios.” so I decided to give it a shot. I took it one day at a time, and I stayed for eight months.
I was instantly amazed at how much better I felt eating small, healthy meals frequently throughout the day. The nutrition part was also easy because the nutrition team takes their time and explains food choices and is always available to meet in person or by email or phone. I never felt I was dieting. My Fitness Coach was always sweet, tough, patient, persistent and supportive. In between sessions, she texted me workouts and motivations. She helped me get through Thanksgiving and Christmas without gaining weight.
In eight months at JWFNS, I lost 48 pounds and a whole bunch of bad habits and attitudes. I literally have never felt younger in my life. I’ve gotten off a lot of the meds I was taking and life is just better all the way around. I have been a weekend warrior for the past 8 years, routinely competing in multi-sport and running events. As such, I came into JWFNS already “workout disciplined.” However, I wasn’t as disciplined with my nutrition or with strength and core training. Since beginning my training, and getting support and advice with my nutrition, I’ve lost 29.8 pounds, 23.5 inches, and 9 percent body fat. The need for many seniors to lose weight and shape up has been in the news lately. In one story, a doctor doubts “whether you’re going to see people lose 50 to 100 pounds as they’re older.” Oh, really? This senior has lost 55 pounds since first waddling into Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios — with borderline diabetes — less than a year ago
It hasn’t always been easy. I remember announcing at our first nutrition consult: “I won’t drink anything green!” Wrong again. The JWFNS Kale Smoothie is now one of my favorites. I never thought of myself as the “fat chick.” I avoided mirrors and photographs and just imagined myself as the athlete that I used to be. I tried to forget that I could barely squeeze into a size 14 anymore. I was just careful about choosing my clothes so that I didn’t need to tuck in shirts, hiding my bulging waistline. In 2007, I had lost weight after running many miles every week. However, since my poor eating habits never changed, when I got bored with running, I quickly gained back all the weight I had lost plus another 10 pounds. After reading all of JWFNS’ success stories, I realized that their program could provide the motivation I needed to make a fresh start. In January 2009, I started their program at my highest weight of 187 pounds.
JWFNS unlocked the secret to healthy eating for me. By making a few tweaks in my food choices and eating five mini-meals per day instead of three large ones, I found that my junk food cravings went away.
As a lifelong “junk food junkie,” I couldn’t believe it when they actually went away! Not that I never eat junk food anymore, it’s just no longer a nightly event. The first 20 pounds seemed to melt away with me losing about two or three pounds per week. In addition to making better food choices, I do cardio three or four times per week and lift weights twice per week. I have lost 25 pounds total and am still working towards losing another 15. More importantly, I am confident that this time I will keep it off.

First of all I’d like to say “Thank you, JWFNS!” I honestly feel like I couldn’t have accomplished losing over 50 pounds without JWFNS’s program and constant encouragement.
For years, I spent too much time thinking about losing weight. I don’t even remember gaining it all, but slowly it just happened. After attending culinary school and having two children, I was up to 188 pounds at age 31. All I wanted for my birthday was to lose the weight. So, as a gift, I began training with JWFNS. In August of 2011, I wanted to answer the question, “Can I change my cholesterol numbers on my own?” Having been a college athlete and blessed with a high metabolism, I’ve been in shape my whole life. But my doctor would have given my HDL and LDL numbers a grade of D. Next move? Combine a rigorous workout schedule with a specific diet . That led me to Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. Once my wife and I sat down with the team at JWFNS, we were on our way.
My goal was to hit it hard and get some blood work done in four months. Well, I was psyched when my numbers improved 25% and my new grade was a B. I have been a casual runner since college and have always been a pretty healthy eater. Once I hit my mid-40s, the extra pounds are staying on every year and knew that I needed to do something. In 2010, I had a major health scare, two major surgeries, and a “milestone” birthday. Once I got the “O.K.” from my doctor, I decided to start working with a personal trainer. I did a lot of research online, found JWFNS and the rest is history.
The dietitians gave me a meal plan, and after two months of hard work with my trainer I lost 7 inches and 5 pounds. I started wearing a size two again, something I never thought would happen. I have been working with my trainer for two and a half years and absolutely love it. She varies our workouts and makes them fun and challenging, which keeps me coming back for more. “I travel a lot for work.” That has always been my excuse for the 50 extra pounds I put on in the last two years. So while I was in Virginia Beach working for eight months I decided it was time to lose weight. Someone at the diet center I was going to recommended I go see the folks at JWFNS. When I was in middle school, I was that wimpy kid with no self-confidence, and I struggled with anorexia. At age 13, I weighed 68 pounds, and was perfectly content with it. It wasn’t until my parents took me to JWFNS that I saw a team who I could really trust. They were honestly trying to help me be healthy and even got me excited about gaining muscle. I don’t think I was ever in really bad shape, but after joining the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, learning I had low bone density, and getting closer and closer to a big birthday, I decided I better get serious about improving myself. I sat down with the trainers at JWFNS and they hand wrote a nutritional plan for me, and then we started training together.
All I can say is, wow. In 18 months, I’ve lost 30 pounds and 30 inches. Let me say that again: I’ve lost 30 pounds and 30 inches. Even more important is what I’ve gained: confidence, energy and strength. It’s an amazing feeling. For most of my life I’ve been overweight. I tried countless times to lose the weight, but nothing ever seemed to work. Even though I never showed it when I was in public, inside I hated what I looked like and wanted to change. Then junior year of high school came along and I was determined to lose weight for the junior prom in May, but I still had no motivation to eat correctly.
With the help of Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios, I worked hard from February to May and by prom time I was 40 pounds lighter. Not only that, after a year of training, I was so confident with the way I looked and felt that I competed in a bodybuilding show, placing first in the Novice under-175-pounds class, and second in the overall Novice class. For the last several years, I found myself gaining 1-2 pounds from eating almost anything I wanted. Meanwhile, with heart disease running in my family, my cholesterol numbers were bad and getting worse.
After my doctor, wife, and a close friend all commented to me that I had been “putting on a few pounds,” I knew I needed to do something. For years, I considered myself in good shape… I was doing high-level athletics, heavy weight lifting, and regular cardio. But as time went on, and college turned into law school, and law school into a full-time career — good shape turned to decent shape and eventually to the worst shape of my life when I reached 217 pounds.
Unhappy with my workout routine, dietary habits, energy levels, and overall appearance, I decided to make a change. I began training with Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. While training with them for the 2012 Virginia Beach Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon, my dietary habits became a hindrance both to my goals and my weight loss. The trainers designed a nutrition plan emphasizing the keys to reach my personal goals. Following their dietary plan, I finally lost the pounds that were prohibiting a truly great physique.
I now feel better than ever, weighing in around 176 pounds and continuing training for multiple future running events. In February of 2011 I was 335 pounds, out of shape, out of breath and feeling bad about myself. My wife suggested that we check out Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios because a friend of hers was having remarkable results with them.

Growing up as a competitive gymnast, I understood fitness and nutrition from an early age – or so I thought. Along with poor food choices, I allowed myself to believe that the time demands of professional school and work took me away from regular exercise. I soon found myself in my mid 30s, 100+ pounds overweight and always tired and unhappy with how I looked.

Three years ago, at age 46 and 188 pounds for my 5’2” frame, having hypertension, elevated cholesterol, depression and at a loss for what to do next, a friend said to me “go to Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios and see if they can help you.” And did they ever! They assessed my diet, gave me direction, and I began the JWFNS way of eating. I have completely changed what, when and how I eat. They noted that I had a L4-5 spinal fusion 3 years prior and I was skeptical that I could be successful training in a gym, let alone attain the physique I now have. They proved me wrong.

I came to JWFNS because I wanted to be competitive in triathlons and was not able to successfully drop my body fat even though I was working out four days a week and eating what I thought was a pretty “clean” diet. The JWFNS nutrition team provided insight into why my current diet was limiting my success and provided me with eating strategies that fit my lifestyle, were tasty and worked around my food allergy.

My fitness goals started with a desire to change how I felt physically and how I felt about myself. I started going to the gym at the recreation center, but with no real goals or plan other than wanting to change.
I met the Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios staff, and they were responsive to the questions I had and receptive to my concerns. As I approached turning 40, I was becoming more and more distressed at my “forty”-year-old stamina and waist line. I am only 5’7″ and had reached a weight of 204 pounds in the spring of 2009. I had also outgrown my size 36 inch waist pants.
In September 2009 I started with Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios with a cholesterol level over 300 and weighing 189 pounds. Jim prescribed me a new diet and exercise plan. I immediately began working out with the JWFNS team two days a week and following the diet plan. In addition, I added two days of cardio conditioning a week on my own.
Nine months later I weigh 162 pounds and wear 31 inch pants! My cholesterol, without the help of medication, is now 152. I continue to enjoy working with the JWFNS team and have now set new goals to rebuild my body as it should be. At age 17, I weighed 227 pounds and was gaining weight each month. I had a resting heartbeat of 99 and my blood pressure was not good in any way. I met Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios and started training with them several years ago. Just when I started seeing results, I had an unexpected move to Roanoke, Virginia for a job. Not long after the move, I was soon out of shape and my weight increased to an undesirable level. Once again I found myself dialing up JWFNS begging for help.
I came back to Virginia Beach to meet with JWFNS, who wrote out my fitness and nutrition plan and provided motivation even though we were miles apart. When I began this time around, I weighed 168 pounds, had a 35 inch waist, my body fat was 18 percent. I followed JWFNS’ workout and nutrition plan very closely over a 4 month period. I met with the team at their studio on July 10, 2009 and was very excited to show them the progress I had made.

My goal to be fit would reverse all the health symptoms I had acquired. I would enjoy the greatest reward of all by watching the positive impact this would have on my family.
I had tried many diets and failed. I had tried personal training at other gyms and failed. Prior to visiting Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios, I had researched over 15 local gyms in the area and realized they were all missing something.
My partnership with JWFNS started with an overhaul of our kitchen pantry. Then it was off to the grocery store to learn how to shop and eat healthy for the whole family. The blueprint was laid out for three days of strength training and 6 days of cardio for 45 minutes or more. I was given guidance on food choices at every session. By learning what foods stimulates your metabolism and keeps it at peak levels is the key to a lifestyle change. During my training I never once saw myself on a diet. I was eating more often in healthier portions and choices. I was very motivated not to fail and committed myself to succeed. It required me to put my health first and make time in the day to get fit. I reached 214 pounds in less than 9 months. All my previous health issues are gone. I am proud to say I am Jim White FIT!

I used to be a trainer and thought I knew all of the right things to do and eat — my problem was lacking motivation, inspiration and accountability. I had lost the ability to do this on my own, I gave Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios a call and asked them to help get me back on track. They designed a meal plan where I was not hungry whatsoever and set me up with a fitness coach.
I found my workouts empowering and rewarding. I soon found myself wanting to do more on my own and was eating clean and healthy. The weight came off and I started to become a happier version of me. My journey with the Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios began in Spring of 2011. I was inspired by the JWFNS coaches’ lifestyle of practicing what they preach — they were dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a super clean diet and completing a daily exercise routine.
Ever since college, I had a problem abusing alcohol on the weekends. My JWFNS coach encouraged me to give up that vice, as it was holding me back from reaching my fitness goals. He helped me to get into the best shape of my life the summer of 2011. Unfortunately, that Fall, I suffered injuries that inhibited me from exercising consistently for a full year. But in 2013, JWFNS helped me get back to where I was before my injury and I’ve reached new heights of physical fitness. The nutrition plan, combined with training and ongoing encouragement, is a sure-fire way to accomplish whatever fitness goals you have.
